Boston, Mass. - Kansas State's first varsity eight placed fifth on Saturday in a regatta hosted by Northeastern University on the Charles River.

The Wildcats finished the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 53.1 seconds. All five boats finished within 11 seconds in a tight race. Host Northeastern won all three races the Wildcats entered, which included both varsity eights and the varsity four.

The K-State varsity four had the best finish of the day for the Wildcats on Saturday, placing second behind Northeastern. The four finished in 8:06.1, less than five seconds behind the winners.

The Wildcats' second varsity eight was third, finishing 16 seconds behind Northeastern.

"I felt like we had some solid races, with the varsity four having one of its best," said Wildcat head coach Jenny Hale. "We really controlled the race for much of it, but Northeastern moved past us just after the 1,000-meter mark. For that group, we rowed quite well.

"The second varsity eight rowed much longer and with much more patience, which is an improvement for them," Hale said. "The varsity struggled in the second half of the race, and we had some steering problems. We were in good position at the 1,000-meter mark just four or five seats down to Northeastern. We didn't have a good second 1,000 meters for the 1V.

"Both the four and the second eight made some technical changes we've been working on during our bye week. They raced well."

Kansas State hosts the Kansas Cup against the Jayhawks on Saturday, April 27 on Tuttle Creek Lake.
