K-State Places Fourth in Cal Cup Rowing Final

San Diego, Calif. - Kansas State's first varsity eight placed fourth in the grand final of the Women's Cal Cup on Sunday in the final day of the San Diego Crew Classic. The Wildcats covered the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 52.65 seconds. Duke won the Cal Cup by capturing the six-boat final in 6:43.40. The Blue Devils were followed by Massachusetts (6:49.87) and SMU (6:51.56). K-State was in fifth over the first 500 meters, but posted a strong second-500 split to move into third. SMU rallied over the final quarter of the race to move past the Wildcats into third. UMass edged the Mustangs and Wildcats in a tight battle for second place, with less than three seconds separating those three boats. Kansas State also placed fourth in the Petite Final of the Women's JV Division for second varsity eight boats. The Wildcats rowed the course in 7:11.20, placing within three seconds of second-place Stanford (7:08.01) and Minnesota (7:09.12). Oregon State won the JV Petite Final in 7:02.10. The Wildcats' 2V8 also was in fifth over the first 500 meters and had pulled to third at the halfway point. Minnesota rallied over the third 500 to pass the Wildcats for third place. After next weekend off, Kansas State travels to Boston on April 20 to compete in a regatta hosted by Northeastern University.
