Iowa City, Iowa - Iowa overcame a deficit in the second half of the race and rallied to beat Kansas State in the varsity eight race Saturday in a collegiate rowing dual meet held at the Sugar Bottom Race Course.

Iowa won all five races over the Wildcats on Saturday, but Kansas State was able to race to closer margins than in previous competitions with the Hawkeyes.

"In four of the five races, we led for some or all of the race," said Wildcat head coach Jenny Hale. "In the varsity eights, we had the races in hand and gave them up. But on the other hand, we raced the No. 10 team in the country and raced them tighter than we ever had in the spring before. That bodes well for our boat speed and building some boat speed."

K-State led the first varsity eight race for the first 1,300 meters, but the Hawkeyes put on a spurt. Hale said the Wildcats made late-race steering mistakes that hurt their chances to win. Iowa won in 7:07.1, with the Wildcats trailing by 3.7 seconds.

Iowa won the second varsity eight race by four seconds, again pulling ahead in the second half of the race.

Kansas State will travel to the San Diego Crew Classic next weekend.
