Wildcats Sweep SMU, Tulsa at Longhorn Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas - Kansas State's rowing team won six of seven races on Saturday in the second day of the Longhorn Invitational rowing event being held at Austin's Town Lake.
In the morning, the Wildcats varsity eight edged out SMU by covering the 2,000-meter course in 6:56.1, beating the Mustangs by only 1.5 seconds.
Also in a series of races with SMU, Kansas State won the first novice eight with a time of 7:19.6 and the second varsity eight in 7:05.4. The Wildcats average margin of victory over the Mustangs was 19 seconds in the three races.
"We had much better races in the second varsity eights today than we did yesterday," said Wildcat head coach Jenny Hale. "We just rowed with much more intensity today."
In a match race this morning, the Wildcat varsity four battled Iowa, which the 'Cats will face next week in Manhattan, only to finish 9 seconds behind the Hawkeyes.
In the afternoon, K-State's first varsity eight went 6:56.6 to defeat Tulsa for their third straight sprint under seven minutes this spring. The Wildcats also won the first novice eight race with Tulsa, earning the win by over 42 seconds, and the second varsity eight competition with a 7:07.1.
Racing ends on Sunday with a series of races that has Kansas State paired with Duke. The Wildcat first varsity eight has gone 2-1 thus far, while the team has won 6 of 11races at the Longhorn Invitational
