Cats Finish Fall Season with Seventh-Place Showing

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. In its final tournament of the fall season, the Kansas State women’s golf team finished seventh at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate. The Wildcats moved up from a first-round placing of 13^th and improved each round after carding scores of 316-308-307931.

“I’m proud of the way we responded,” head coach Kristi Knight said. “Our first 18 holes were sloppy, but seventh is a lot better than finishing 13^th.”

Leading the Wildcats was junior Katy Heffel with her first top-20 finish of the season. Heffel finished in a seven-way tie for 13^th after carding rounds of 75-77-77229. Also finishing in the top 20 was sophomore Kali Quick, marking her third top-20 showing of the season. Quick tied for 20^th with rounds of 78-75-77230.

Taking the team title by one shot was Idaho with scores of 309-305-298912. Host College of Charleston took second after rounds of 312-297-304913. The only other Big 12 school competing, Nebraska, finished in third place.

Idaho’s Renee Skidmore took the individual title after carding 74-75-71220. Finishing one shot behind the leader was Adrienne White of Louisville, with scores of 76-74-71221.

K-State’s Michelle Regan tied for 43^rd after carding 82-77-77236. Helene Robert tied for 60^th with scores of 81-84-76241. Hailey Mireles shot 88-79-83250 to place 82^nd.

Overall, Knight is optimistic about the spring season after the conclusion of fall.

“This could be considered a solid fall,” Knight said. “It would have been disappointing to end on a down note. We can hopefully build on what we have done and do even better things in the spring.”

The Wildcats tee off their spring season on Feb. 20-21, 2006, when the squad travels to Parrish, Fla., for the Central District Invitational.
