Wildcats Set To Wrap Up Fall Season
NEXT ON THE TEE: The Kansas State women's golf team will wrap up its fall season at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Oak Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C., Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 26 and 27. The first round in scheduled for a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (ET), with the second round beginning shortly after the first is completed. The third and final round is scheduled for a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. (ET) on Tuesday.
THE FIELD: Traveling east with the K-State will be in-state rival Kansas. The Jayhawks have competed in every event as the Wildcats this fall. The entire 16 team field consists of: Arkansas-Little Rock, Campbell, Charleston Southern, College of Charleston, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Elon, Georgia State, Kansas, Kansas State, Maryland, Miami, Richmond, UMKC, Western Carolina and William & Mary. The College of Charleston will host the competition.
PALMETTO INTERCOLLEGIATE PREVIEW: Head coach Kristi Knight will send a pair of freshmen in Kristen Dorsey and Whitney Pyle to Kiawah Island, who qualified to play in just the second collegiate event of their careers this week. Each competed in the Sunflower Inviational at Colbert Hills in September in which Pyle tied for 33rd and Dorsey tied for 56th.
The two freshmen will not be thrown into competition without leadership as seniors Abbi Sunner and Morgan Moon will be in the lineup as well. Moon has the lowest stroke average on the team (77.00) with a personal 18-hole low of 73 on the season. Right behind Moon is Sunner with a stroke average of 77.75. Sunner competed in the 2007 Palmetto Intercollegiate and carded a 20-over par 236.
Ami Storey will also complete the lineup for the Wildcats. Storey owns a 78.41 stroke average with her best finish of the season coming in the latest competition at the Price's Give'em Five Invitational where she tied for 14th.
2007 PALMETTO INTERCOLLEGIATE: The Wildcats didn't post the final-round score they would have liked in the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate, but they still managed a third-place finish on the par 72, 5,933-yard Oak Point Golf Course. The Wildcats finished the tournament at 61-over par 925, 19 strokes off the lead. The top-5 placing was the fourth in five tournaments during the fall 2007 schedule. The Cats' best finish in this tournament came in 2002 when they finished second.
OAK POINT GOLF COURSE: The competition will take place at the par 72, 5,917-yard Oak Point Golf Course. The course is one of five championship golf courses owned by the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
LAST TIME OUT: In the final round of the Price's Give'em Five Intercollegiate, the Wildcats shot a 300 to finish seventh out of 18 teams at NMSU Golf Course. After three rounds, K-State carded a 900 (+36), its best score of the season. The Wildcats were able to move up one spot after round two, but were unable to improve in the final round. The Cats finished in the top three in par-3 scoring (+1) and finished third best in total pars with 170.
