Solid First Round Puts Cats in Eighth
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Morgan Moon and Ami Storey each shot 3-over par 75 in the first round on Monday to put the Kansas State women’s golf team in a tie for eighth place in the 18-team Price’s Give’em Five Intercollegiate at the par-72 NMSU Golf Course.
K-State shot 305 (+17) in the first round as it was able to keep pace with the field on the par 3s, shooting just 1-over par on the designated par-3 holes, which was fourth-best among the field. However, the Wildcats struggled on other parts of the course, shooting 26-over on the par-4 holes. K-State’s 305 is two strokes better than it shot in last year’s competition when it shot a 307 in the first round.
“The team feels that they shot as high as we could have shot today,” said head coach Kristi Knight. “We hit a lot of good shots but did not make many putts. It was a solid start.”
The Wildcats were able to edge out fellow Big 12 opponent Kansas by one stroke as the Jayhawks shot 18-over par 306. Baylor is the other Big 12 team in the field and shot 303 (+15), putting it in a tie for fifth.
Defending champion UC-Irvine leads the tournament after shooting 294 (+6), holding a two-stroke lead over Idaho, which shot 296.
Three players are tied atop the leaderboard as Hannah Burke of Baylor, Christine Wong of San Diego State and Joy Trotter of UC-Irvine each carded a score of 3-under par 69.
Moon, who was not in the lineup last week in Columbia, Mo., shot 36 on the front nine followed by 39 on the back for a total of 75, which put her in a tie for 14th after the first round. The senior shot a 1-over par 73 in the first round last year.
Storey kept pace with Moon, also shooting 75. The native of the UK carded a 37 on the front nine backed by a 38 on the back nine, joining Moon in a tie for 14th.
Tied for 39th-place is senior Abbi Sunner, who carded 77 (+5), after shooting 39 on the front and 38 on the back. She shot a 79 (+7) in the first round last year.
Junior Emily Houtz shot 40 on the front nine and backed that up with 38 for a first-round total of 78 (+6). She is tied for 53rd.
Freshman Hanna Roos, who has had early success in her young career with one top-10 finish, struggled in the opening round as she carded an 11-over par 83.
Round two of the Price’s Give’em Five Collegiate will begin with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m., (CT) on Tuesday. The third and final round will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. (CT) on Wednesday. Results will be posted on www.k-statesports.com as soon as they become available.
