DRIVE FOR 8: The Kansas Jayhawks will be hosting the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational this year at the Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan. Last year the Wildcats hosted the Invitaional and came away with its seventh straight top five finish in the tournament. Senior Helene Robert was the individual title winner in the event, while K-State finished in third place as a team. The Wildcats had three players finish in the top 15 last year, Robert finished in first, junior Michelle Regan finished tied for 12th, and junior Hailey Mireles tied for 15th.
THE FIELD: Kansas State will see some familiar competition in the tournament with the field consisting of seven teams that the Wildcats have already faced this season. The field consists of five top 75 teams in this week’s Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, including Missouri (37), Wisconsin (53), Iowa State (65), Arkansas-Little Rock (72), and Notre Dame (75). K-State is currently 76th. The rest of the 16-team field consists of Creighton, Drake, Evansville, Illinois State, Indiana State, Kansas, North Texas, Southern Mississippi, UMKC, and Wichita State. Sara Wilkstrom of Arkansas-Little Rock is currently ranked as the No. 2 women’s collegiate player in the country in this weeks Golfweek/Sagarin ratings.
THE FORMAT: The tournament will tee off on Monday with 36 holes, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday’s third and finial round will begin at 8 a.m. The low four individual scores will determine the team score for each round.
THE HOST Alvamar Golf Club: The home courses of the Kansas Jayhawks, Alvamar Golf Club is located in Lawrence, Kan. The par 72, course will be hosting the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational for the second time in the last three years.
LAST TIME OUT: The Wildcats posted their first top five team finish of the season with a fifth place finish at the Chip-N-Club Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. For the second time in this young season junior Michelle Regan posted a top-20 finish and paced the Cats shooting rounds of 80-78-79237 (+21) to finish tied for 12th with senior teammate Helene Robert. Robert carded scores of 82-78-77237 (+21) to score her second straight top-20 finish as well. Junior Kali Quick grabbed her first top-20 finish of the season, tying for 16th with rounds of 76-82-82240 (+24). Junior Hailey Mireles shot rounds of 77-86-78241 to finish tied for 18th. Senior Katy Heffel posted rounds of 80-82-80242 (+26) to finish tied for 21st. Freshman Abbi Sunner competed in her first collegiate tournament and performed well for the Wildcats. Sunner carded an 81-80-75236 (+20) for the tournament, en route to a team best 10th-place finish individually.
ROBERT LOOKS TO DEFEND TITLE: Senior Helene Robert will look to defend her individual title at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational next Monday. Robert took the top honor over Nebraska’s Stephanie Ruiz at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational at Colbert Hills Golf Course last year after rain delays and a two-hole playoff for individual champion. This year, the tournament will be played just down Interstate 70 in Lawrence at the Alvamar Golf Club.
