Wildcats Finish Fifth at Chip-N-Club
Nebraska was able to maintain the lead it had at the beginning of round three to hold on for the tournament win with rounds of 317-306-306-929 (+65) to finish six strokes ahead of second place Campbell University.
Overall, the Wildcats had five of their six players finish in the top 20 individually for the event.
“Fifth is a disappointing finish for us,” said head coach Kristi Knight. “We had higher hopes obviously, but the effort was there. The girls are playing with a lot of heart. We got off to a nice start in the first round in really tough conditions, and from there it was a struggle. In the first round we didn’t hit the ball into many hazards, and found them more in the second and third rounds. The girls struggled with the greens; they never got comfortable with the speed. We just have to execute better from here on out. We have two weeks until our next tournament, so we need to look at the positives and build on them, and that’s what we’ll do.”
Freshman Abbi Sunner carded a final round of 3-over par to climb the scoreboard and finish tied for 10th at the Chip-N-Club Invitational. Sunner posted a three round total of 20-over 236 for the tournament, including her final round of 75 to finish play seven strokes off the lead.
“I was obviously pleased with Abbi (Sunner), finishing 10th in her first tournament. I was really encouraged by her start, and I am happy for her,” said Knight.
Junior Michelle Regan shot rounds of 80-78-79-237 to finish the tournament tied for 12th with senior Helene Robert.
Robert posted rounds of 82-78-77-237 to secure her second top-20 finish of the season.
