Wildcats struggle in first round of NCAA Regional
NORMAL, Ill. - The Kansas State women’s golf team struggled in the first round of the NCAA Central Regional Thursday, shooting a 326 to place 21st.
Head coach Kristi Knight said the team’s short game and missed putts caused problems.
“We missed the greens,” Knight said. “It was frustrating. Our short game held us back at Big 12s. A solid short game will make mediocre golf, good golf. But a bad short game will make a mediocre game worse.”
Senior Christine Boucher, a week after being named Big 12 Conference Player of the Year, shot a 14-over 85.
“Christine wants to accomplish certain goals,” Knight said. “She had a tough day and struggled with her ball striking and struggled with her driver. She didn’t drive as well as she normally does and she was put in bad situations, but she is a competitor and she’ll bounce back.”
Senior Karen Quintelier shot a 78 to tie for 46th. Juniors Sarah Heffel and Stephanie Limoges shot 82 and 82, tying for 70th and 84th, respectively. Freshman Helene Robert is in 106th place after shooting an 86 in the first round.
Knight hopes the team will come out Friday with a refreshed attitude, ready to face the day’s challenges head on.
“Tomorrow could be a completely different day,” Knight said. “You never know. That’s the thing with sport, the unexpected happens. I think we will bounce back.”
