Golfers Continue Big 12 Improvement, Finish Eighth at Championship
AUSTIN, Texas - The Kansas State women’s golf team finished eighth at the Big 12 Championship Sunday, as it shot a third-round 317 and improved two places from Saturday’s second round. Oklahoma State won the conference tournament with a combined 900, while Texas finished second one shot behind.
Sophomore Katy Heffel led the Wildcats with a 54-hole score of 234 to tie for 22nd. Sophomore Helene Robert, the Wildcats’ leader on the year, carded four birdies and improved with her third-round 76 for a total score of 242 to tie for 41st. Senior Sarah Heffel was 1-under on the first nine holes, but carded two triple-bogeys on the front nine to finish the day. “We started on the back nine, where we had struggled before,” head coach Kristi Knight said. “But we played very well, and we were only 3-over as a team. At the turn, we started to lose it and struggled on the final nine.” Oklahoma State’s Annie Thurman-Young, Big 12 Player of the Year, took the individual trophy with a 4-under 212. K-State, the highest rated Big 12 team since early October, defeated four conference rivals, including Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Iowa State. The Wildcats are No. 78 in the Golfweek/Sagarin poll. “It is nice to beat teams that are ranked ahead of us,” Knight said. “I am proud of our effort and especially proud of our response after the first round when we were in 12th.” The Big 12 Championship concludes the Wildcats’ spring slate, but Knight says she looks forward to next season. “The freshmen and sophomores that competed this weekend got some good experience and they really competed. Things look good for next year.” For complete coverage of the Championships, please visit Kansas State’s website at www.kstatesports.com or the conference website at www.big12sports.com.
