K-State Improves in Second Round of Big 12 Championship
AUSTIN, Texas - The Kansas State women’s golf team improved its standing after the second day of the Big 12 Championship with a second-round score of 314. The Wildcats moved up two slots to 10th place. Sophomore Katy Heffel shot a 76 and leads the Wildcats with 154. Remaining in first place is Oklahoma State with a score of 602. Texas closely trails on its home course by one shot.
K-State was one of only two teams to improve from their first-day score. The Wildcats improved by six shots, while Iowa State bettered their score by three. “On the first day, we didn’t have any wind,” head coach Kristi Knight said. “That was the day to score, but we struggled. Today there was quite a bit of wind, but we improved. I am proud of the girls for coming out and battling the wind.” Leading the board individually is Oklahoma State’s Annie Thurman-Young with a score of 141. Though tough conditions plagued the Big 12 teams, three Wildcats improved in the individual rankings, including Heffel, who moved up 14 places to tie for 12th. Freshman Kali Quick went from a tie for 52nd to a tie for 27th with her second-round 76, and freshman Michelle Regan improved eight slots with a 79 on day two. “The conditions were tougher, but all of the scores improved,” Knight said. “Katy had a solid, steady day, Kali bounced back, and Michelle made improvements.” The Wildcats continue play at the Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas, with the final 18 holes on Sunday.
