Kansas State Takes Sixth at Susie Maxwell Berning Classic

NORMAN, Okla. - In its best finish of the spring, Kansas State ended the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic Monday in sixth place as it carded 311-313-317--941. Sophomore Helene Robert led the team as she tied for 20th with a combined 231, her best finish of the spring. Missouri won the tournament, with an 889, while SMU’s Lacey Jones took the individual trophy with a combined 221.

The second round of the tournament was cut short Sunday due to severe weather risks and was continued Monday morning. Head coach Kristi Knight said though there was not a heavy rain Monday, the north wind made the course play tougher. The team hit the ball well, Knight said, but was quickly frustrated on the green.

“We didn’t get out of the third round what we should have,” Knight said. “We hit the ball well, but we didn’t score well because we threw shots away around the greens.”

Ball striking was the team’s strength this tournament, though sophomore Kali Quick claimed it was her most frustrating aspect in the second and third rounds. Quick recorded a first-round 75, but dropped to a tie for 45th with her second and third round scores.

In only her second tournament of the spring, freshman Hailey Mireles tied for 45th with a 242, competed as an individual. Freshman Michelle Regan, who struck the ball better than she has all season, according to Knight, tied for 38th.

This sixth place finish is the Wildcats’ best since taking fifth at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational Oct. 11-12, 2004 in Lawrence, Kan. K-State beat two Big 12 teams, Nebraska and Oklahoma, heading into the conference tournament.

The Wildcats continue play at the Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas, April 22-24. For complete coverage of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic, please visit Kansas State’s website at www.kstatesports.com and find live results at www.golfstat.com.
