K-State Finishes Fifth in Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. After finishing the first day of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in fifth, the Wildcats shot a third-round 308 to hold onto their standing. K-State ended the tournament 47-over par, firing rounds of 308-295-308911. For the first time this spring, the Wildcats had multiple individuals finish in the top 20. The top Cat was Michelle Regan who finished in a tie for 10th with a 7-over 223. Kali Quick finished two shots behind Regan in 14th, with rounds of 72-72-81225.

Oklahoma State took the team title by 25 shots, firing rounds of 283-284-300867, 3-over par. All members of the Cowgirls squad finished in the top 10, with day-one leader Pernilla Lindberg setting the pace. Lindberg finished one shot ahead of teammate Karin Kinnerud with a 1-under 215, becoming the only player to shoot a 54-hole score under par.

Despite finishing behind Oklahoma State, third-place Texas and fourth-place Nebraska, K-State did finish ahead of four Big 12 competitors. With the conference championship beginning in one week, head coach Kristi Knight is pleased with the win.

“It is nice to get a win against conference teams before the Big 12 Championship,” Knight said. “Hopefully we can build on that. Texas A&M and Oklahoma State are the frontrunners, but after that anything can happen.”

Wildcat Helene Robert finished the tournament strong with a third-round score of 73 and moved up from 64th to finish 39th. Katy Heffel and Hailey Mireles remained steady and finished 55th and 64th respectively. Heffel had rounds of 79-78-79236, while Mireles shots 82-78-78238.

The Wildcats conclude the 2005-06 season with the Big 12 Championship being played April 17-19 in Lincoln, Neb. For complete coverage please visit Kansas State’s website at www.kstatesports.com.
