MIAMI LAKES, Fla. Rain pushed back the start time for the Canes & Cardinal Classic and halted the second round before it was complete, but the Kansas State women’s golf team still got consistent play throughout the lineup and will look to carry that momentum into Tuesday.

The Wildcats posted an 11-over par 299 on their first 18 holes at the Don Shula Golf Resort, putting them in seventh place and within six strokes of second. The start ties K-State’s second-best opening round of the season.

“There were a lot of good things going on,” head coach Kristi Knight said. “We had some momentum going for us this afternoon. The girls are all doing a good job. It was nice that we got multiple scores or 75 or better, and that is really key for us.”

Louisville, one of the tournament hosts along with Miami, sits atop the leaderboard after opening with a 4-under par 284, good for a nine-stroke lead over Georgia State. Louisville’s Cindy LaCrosse jumped out to the individual lead by firing a 5-under par 67, which included a back nine of 32.

Hailey Mireles was the top Wildcat after the first 18 holes. The senior was tied for ninth by carding a 1-over par 73, her second-best round of the season behind an even-par 72 at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational last fall. She was also just one of nine players in the field to shoot below par on the par-3 holes.

Both Kali Quick and Abbi Sunner shot 3-over par 75s to sit in a tie for 26^th. Elise Houtz was just a stroke back at 4-over par 76 and in a tie for 34^th. Houtz was tied for fifth in par-4 scoring on the round at 1-under par.

The field will being play Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. (CDT) to finish the second round before continuing on with third and final round play. Results will be posted at www.k-statesports.com when made available.
