Cats Finish 12th on Tough ?Mo?Morial Course

BRYAN, Texas Kansas State remained 12th in the final standings at the Texas A&M “Mo”Morial after finishing with rounds of 326-329-329984. Junior Helene Robert was the top finisher for the Cats, tying for 24th after carding 79-77-82238. The “Mo”Morial is only the second tournament this season in which a Wildcat did not finish in the top 20, the first being the fall opener.

Host Texas A&M and the top-ranked team of the field, Arkansas, finished in a tie for first, both shooting a 59-over 923. The Aggies had rounds of 306-304-313923 on their home course, while the Lady Razorbacks shot 307-301-315923. TCU had a field-low final round, improving to finish third after firing 318-309-308935. Only five of the 18 competing schools improved their scores in the third and final round of play, with overall high scores throughout the tournament.

“By far this is the most difficult course we will play all year,” head coach Kristi Knight said. “Ask any team. The course is very unforgiving. The greens are not easy to hit because they are well protected by bunkers and hazards.”

Texas A&M’s Ashley Knoll fired a 2-over 218 to take the individual title. Second-place finisher Elin Emanuelsson, TCU, was seven shots behind, carding 77-73-75225. Stacy Lewis from Arkansas finished third with a 10-over 226.

Despite not having a top-20 finisher, Knight noted a couple of solid rounds from Robert and sophomore Michelle Regan.

“I was pleased with Michelle,” Knight said. “This was her first tournament back from an injury. We competed hard, but each of them has something to work on. It is one thing to have a hard course, but we could have executed better.”

Regan tied for 49th, shooting rounds of 880-81-84245. Kali Quick moved up one position to tie for 69th, carding 82-86-83251. Katy Heffel and Hailey Mireles finished 77th and 78th respectively. Mireles had the most improved round, shooting ten shots better than her first round and six better than her second. Krista Nelson finished her second collegiate tournament in 94th place while competing as an individual.

The Wildcats make their first trip to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational March 21-22. For complete coverage of the tournament please visit Kansas State’s website at www.kstatesports.com.
