Orange Park, Fla. - Kansas State's women's golf team shot a 313 (+25) in the first round of the Eagle Landing Invitational Sunday to sit in ninth-place out of 17 teams.
Despite being delayed an hour due to frost, the Wildcats were able to open the first four holes with six birdies. Senior Abbi Sunner and freshman Hanna Roos had two birdies each during that stretch that put the Cats in a tie for fourth through six holes. K-State was unable to hold the momentum and fell five spots following its play on the back nine.
Central Arkansas leads the competition after carding a 299 (+11), four shots ahead of second place South Florida. Illinois' Hailey Koschmann leads all individual scorers with a 3-under par, 69.
“We were sharp on our first nine but then lost some shots on the back nine," said head coach Kristi Knight. "I think that is a matter of the ladies not having many 18-hole rounds at home leading up to this event and it is our first spring event. There are positives to build on from round one. Morgan, Hanna and Abbi hung in there but we need four scores tomorrow. I am proud of the ladies effort today.”
Sunner and fellow senior Morgan Moon both turned in a scorecard of 5-over par (77) to lead the way for the Wildcats. Sunner's four birdies through 11 holes were equaled by four bogeys on her last eight holes to slide her into a tie for 21st. Moon played par golf throughout most of the round except for a four-hole stretch of bogeys on the back nine that put her in a tie for 21st as well.
Roos, a freshman, shot a 6-over par, 78, in the first action of spring play putting her in a tie for 32nd.
Sophomore Ami Storey turned in a 9-over par, 81, performance to tie for 61st.
Rounding out the lineup for team competition was Elise Houtz who carded a 12-over par, 84, putting her in a tie for 80th.
Competing as an individual, Paige Osterloo shot an 8-over par, 80, placing her in a tie for 50th.
K-State's second round of the Eagle Landing Invitational will start at 7:00 a.m. (CT) on hole No. 1.
