K-State Ties for 12th at Texas A&M Mo'Morial
BRYAN, Texas - In a round that produced higher scores across the board, Kansas State improved one slot and tied for 12th at the Texas A&M Mo’Morial, with scores of 328-326-332--986.
Tournament officials moved up the tees on each hole for the third round because the course played tough Monday, according to head coach Kristi Knight. The new hole locations proved difficult for the Wildcats, particularly on one par 5 hole. Knight said she saw three Wildcats in a good position after two shots, but the pin was tucked behind a bunker. “They were in good shape,” Knight said. “But the third shot was a little off and left them behind the bunker to struggle with the short game.” Freshman Kali Quick led the Wildcats with a combined 240 to tie for 21st. Knight said Quick did not realize Monday how well she played. “Yesterday Kali came off the course thinking she played poorly,” Knight explained. “I told her a 78 and 79 were very competitive and she was in a good position. She is just so competitive and is such a battler. Unfortunately, that can come back to bite her sometimes because she can play too aggressive.” K-State struggled with its ball striking during the third round, Knight said and with the Traditions Golf Course not providing many birdie opportunities, a big hole proved to be detrimental. “We have to play better,” Knight said. “We should not be a back-of-the-pack team. If we can improve our ball striking and a few other things we will be a lot better.” Southern Methodist took the team title with a combined 942, while Illinois State’s Samantha Richdale stayed in first place of the individual ranks in the third round to win with a total 230. The Wildcats continue play at the Betsy Rawls Invitational March 11-13.
