ENSENADA, Mex. The Kansas State women’s golf team shot opening day rounds of 326 and 316 in the first action of the spring season to finish the day tied for 11th. Due to inclement weather the third round never happened and the Wildcats did not have a chance to improve their position in the team standings.

The University of Oregon captured the team title with rounds of 298 and 311. Oregon’s Kimberly McCready captured the individual title after shooting 145 (+1) to finish the first day.

Kansas State freshman Abbi Sunner had another strong outing with a first day 76-74150 (+6) to finish tied for second and capture her second career individual top-ten in just three events. Sunner finished 10th at the Chip-N-Club Invitational in Lincoln on September 18th and 19th.

“She (Abbi) did a great job,” said head coach Kristi Knight. “Michelle was steady with a 77-77154. This was not a good event for us. Hopefully we can get a break in the weather and get outside to play. We have 18 days before we leave for Fresno and the team just needs to play. There is a big difference between hitting balls and playing the game.”

Other Wildcats among the tournament field, junior Michelle Regan carded rounds of 77-77154 (+10) to finish tied for 15th and claim her eighth career top-20 finish. Senior Katy Heffel shot an opening day 81-80161 (+17) to tie for 41st place. Junior Hailey Mireles carded rounds of 84-78162 (+18) to finish tied for 47th.

The Wildcats next action will be at the Fresno State Invitational at the Copper River Country Club in Fresno, Calif. It will be the Wildcats first appearance in this tournament.
