WOMEN'S GOLF FINISHES SIXTH IN SUSIE MAXWELL

Manhattan, Kan. - The Kansas State women's golf team shot rounds of 306-308-312--926 Monday and Tuesday to finish sixth at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the par-72, 6,013-yard Jimmie Austin Golf Course. Junior Miranda Smith finished in 11th at the 15-team tournament with rounds of 73-76-78--227, which was the best 54-hole tournament of her career. Previously, Smith shot a 230 at the Alltel Husker Invitational in September 2001. In addition, Smith's first-round 73 tied her career low round and placed her tied for fifth after the opening round. Sophomore Christine Boucher shot a final-round 76 after rounds of 75 and 79 Monday (230), to keep her 18th-place standing, which she held after the first two rounds. Senior Edie Murdoch finished tied for 20th place with rounds of 78-75-78--231. Murdoch was tied for 14th after the first day of the tournament. Freshman Sarah Heffel finished tied for 46th with rounds of 80-78-81--239, and junior Elise Carpentier shot 84-79-80--243 to place 61st. Junior Morgan Hagler and freshman Stephanie Limoges competed individually for the Wildcats. Hagler finished in 70th with scores of 83-83-84--250, and Limoges placed tied for 81st with rounds of 87-91-87--265. No. 20 Oklahoma won the tournament with rounds of 294-292-291--877 and had the top individual, Lisa Meldrum, who took the title with scores of 70-70-71--211. Baylor was 33 strokes behind the Sooners, but finished second with a three-round score of 910. Nebraska shot a final-round 297 to jump from sixth to third and tied the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. Maria Svensson of Arkansas-Little Rock took second with rounds of 219, and Baylor's Melanie Hagewood placed third with rounds of 220.
