MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State Equestrian team will begin the 2012-13 season with the second annual Purple-White scrimmage on Sunday. The event is set to begin at 9 a.m., at Timbercreek Stables.
Sunday's scrimmage will give the Wildcat coaching staff a chance to see its newcomers in action as well as its returning veterans including 2012-13 team captains Kelly Bovaird, Sam Etsell, Meredith Finch and Rachel Webster. This will also be the Wildcat coaching debuts for Anna Shierholz and Lydia Placzek.
Head coach Casie Lisabeth, entering her sixth season with the Wildcats and her fourth season as the head coach, expects her captains to lead the way this season.
"I have really high expectations for our captains," said Lisabeth. "The biggest thing is that they have been with the program for two years, they know what it is like under pressure. They know what it is like on the good days and the bad days and they can help their teammates to get through that."
Wildcat riders will compete in equitation over fences, horsemanship, equitation on the flat and reining, in that order. All riders will be riding in one event as the competition will function as a normal, gameday setting with riders competing head-to-head on pre-drawn horses. This format will give each K-State equestrian student-athlete an opportunity to compete in a varsity setting.
Admission to Sunday's event is free to the public. The 2012-13 fall season will officially get underway on Sept. 28-29, as K-State will host SMU and UT-Martin at Timbercreek Stables.
