English Team Finishes Third in Region after Final Three Shows
Feb. 19, 2001 Canyon, Texas - The Kansas State women's equestrian team ended its first-ever regular season after a three-show event at West Texas A&M, Feb. 16-17. K-State finished fourth in the first show with 21 points behind Oklahoma State (28 points), Texas A&M (23 points) and Louisiana State (22 points). The Wildcats started Saturday on a positive note by tying Texas A&M for first place (27 points). The Wildcats placed fourth with 15 points behind Oklahoma State (39 points), Texas A&M (28 points) and West Texas A&M (26 points) in the third show. K-State finished the English season with 235 overall team points for third place in the region behind first place Texas A&M (266 points) and Oklahoma State (264 points). K-State was led by Lenexa, Kan., native, Lindsey Hill. Hill placed in all three shows of the weekend in the Beginning Walk/Trot division. She earned first place in the Friday night show and third in both shows on Saturday. Many Wildcat riders placed in the top three of their respective divisions: Kara Jagels (Intermediate Fences, 2nd), Kristy Rue (Novice Fences, 3rd/Novice Flat, 2nd), Angie Guglielmino (Novice Flat, 3rd/Intermediate Flat, 2nd), Julie Hufft (Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter, 1st, 3rd), Kati Griffin (Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter, 2nd, 1st), Gretchen Pfister (Beginning Walk/Trot, 1st, 1st), Callie Smith (Beginning Walk/Trot, 2nd, 1st), Maureen Reynolds (Open Fences, 2nd/Open Flat, 3rd, 2nd), Angie Shilling (Intermediate Fences, 3rd),Emily Mertz (Intermediate Flat, 2nd), Kelli Wilson (Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter, 1st, 2nd), Sarah Keller (Beginning Walk/Trot/Canter, 2nd), Melissa Thompson (Novice Fences, 3rd/Intermediate Flat, 2nd) and Megan Douthit (Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter, 1st). Although the season is completed for the team, K-State qualified eight individual riders to regional competition. Reynolds will represent the team in Intermediate Fences and Open Flat. Jagels and Rue both qualified in Novices Fences and Novice Flat. Teammate Guglielmino also qualified in the Novice Flat division. Mertz will compete at regionals in Intermediate Flat. Katie Griffin qualified in the Walk/Trot/Canter division, while Smith and Pfister both will compete in Walk/Trot. Regionals for both the Western and English divisions of the equestrian team take place in College Station, Texas, Mar. 3. |
