Wildcat English Riders Struggle at Nationals
The Kansas State women’s equestrian team had three individual English riders compete on the first day of competition at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) national competition held at Middle Tennessee State’s Horse Science Arena.
Juniors Sarah Waxman competed in intermediate equitation over fences, Allison Woodworth in equitation over fences and Dehlia Burdan in the equitation on the flat portion of the U.S. Equestrian/Cacchione Cup. Eighteen riders compete in each individual event for the English side of the competition with the top-two riders competing from zones 1-9. The first event of the four-day competition was intermediate equitation over fences. Waxman rode for the Wildcats, but wasn’t able to pull off a top-10 placing. Woodworth rode in individual equitation over fences, but faced tough competition and wasn’t able to bring home a placing finish. “Both Allison (Woodworth) and Sarah (Waxman) rode very well,” said assistant coach Meghan Cunningham. “The competition is very tough here and they both rode their best.” Riding in the U.S. Equestrian/Cacchione Cup was Burdan, who finished in 15th place out of the 29 riders with 84 points in equitation on the flat. The event is the first of two that help determine the finalists for the Cacchione Cup. The final event for the Cacchione Cup competitors is equitation over fences and will take place Friday morning. “Dehlia (Burdan) is in the middle of the pack after today,” Cunningham said. “If she puts a strong ride in tomorrow, I’m confident she’ll pull herself to the top.” Joining Burdan in Friday’s competition is senior Janelle Orr in individual novice on the flat and junior Erin Peery, the first competitor for the western Wildcat riders, in American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) High Point Rider rail phase. Friday’s competition begins with individual novice over fences at 8:30 a.m. followed by the second Cacchione Cup competition, equitation over fences.
