Wildcats Drop Both Shows in Second Round


 

 
 

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. In the second round of the Varsity Equestrian National Championships the Kansas State women’s equestrian team fell to the number one seed in both the Western and English competitions Friday, but will still compete tomorrow for fifth place at New Mexico State University.

 

On the English side, the Wildcats posted a score of 749 dropping the competition to the University of Georgia Bulldogs who scored 786 points. Junior Casey Finnell led all Wildcats with a score of 139.

 

K-State then competed in the consolation round and defeated Oklahoma State with ease 757-701. Freshmen Leslie Yates led the Wildcats with a 158 point performance to help the Cats proceed to the third round to face the Texas A&M Aggies for fifth place.

 

In Western competition, Kansas State lost to Texas A&M by a score of 836-850. Junior Sara Weller led all Wildcats with a score of 141.

 

In the consolation bracket the Wildcats narrowly defeated South Carolina 848-846. With the help of Sophomore Lindsey Salsbury who posted the highest score for K-State with 144 points. The Wildcats will now face New Mexico State for fifth place rights.

 

“We rode very well today. We were competing against the number one seeds in each class and that was tough, “ head coach Teresa Slough said. “We have to give a lot of credit to Texas A&M and Georgia. We just need to keep improving and the best we can place is fifth and that’s what we are shooting for.”
