Lechtenberg Named a Community Champion
MANHATTAN, Kan. Jana Lechtenberg, a member of the Kansas State equestrian team, is one of 12 Big 12 student-athletes named to the 2008-09 Winter Chick-Fil-A Community of Champions squad, the league office announced.
Lechtenberg, a senior from Oakland, Neb., has been a key member of the ninth-ranked Wildcat equestrian team not only in the arena, but in the classroom and community as well.
This season, Lechtenberg is 5-3 in horsemanship with two MVP awards, while last season, she picked up five wins in horsemanship including one MVP honor. Jana also helped lead the Western squad to a third place finish at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships.
A Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection, Lechtenberg has also been involved in community activities such as the Cats for Cans food drive, the Special Olympics, Walkin’ with a Wildcat Mentoring Program, Adopt an Angel and Read and Achieve. A 3.74 student in biology/pre-med, Jana is also a chair of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
During the fall, winter and spring terms, one student-athlete from each institution is honored based on the following criteria:
Academics: An academic standard of a 3.00 grade point average or higher must be maintained.
Leadership/Sportsmanship: The student-athlete should demonstrate leadership and sportsmanship on and off the field.
Community Service: designated student-athlete should be involved with at least one community service program. The program(s) could be a student organization on campus or within the athletics department.
The institution of the student-athletes’ on this list will be awarded $3,000 each year from Chick-fil-A for their efforts.
