MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State equestrian team will kick off the spring portion of its 2010-11 season Friday as it travels to Stillwater, Okla., to face reigning Big 12 Champion Oklahoma State.
K-State (4-5) finished the fall ranked seventh nationally, while Oklahoma State (4-2) finished the first half of the season ranked fourth in the nation.
In the only other meeting between the two teams this past fall, Oklahoma State ended K-State’s three-match win-streak by defeating the Wildcats, 12-7, in Manhattan. Freshman Kelly Bovaird and sophomore Larissa Laffey picked up MVP awards in Horsemanship and Equitation on the Flat, respectively, against the Cowgirls on November 5.
These two riders will again lead their team into action against a talented Oklahoma State squad this weekend.
In Hunter Seat action, Laffey will headline K-State’s English squad, where she will look to build on a very successful fall season. The Byfield, Mass., product was one of the English team’s most consistent riders during the fall, finishing with seven wins and two match-MVP awards.
On the Western side, Bovaird will try to continue her successful freshman season for the Wildcats. The first-year rider from Tulsa, Okla., finished the fall with a record of 6-2, which included a team-high tying two match-MVP awards.
Coming off a two-month break, Kansas State head coach Casie Lisabeth is ready to get back to business and sees this weekend as a great opportunity for her squad to start off the new year on a good note against a quality opponent.
“It has been really great to have the team back together after a long break and get back to work for a tough spring semester,” said Lisabeth. “Oklahoma State will be a big challenge and have a lot of depth to their roster. We are really impressed with how refreshed our team is after break, how hard they have been working to prepare, and how well they have been riding in the small time we have had to prepare.”
Saturday’s dual in Stillwater will be the Wildcats’ last meet on the road until they head to College Station, Texas to compete in the Big 12 Championships on April, 1.
The action will kick off at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Animal Science Arena in Stillwater, Okla.
