Oklahoma State Cools Off K-State's Hot Streak

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Kansas State equestrian team saw its streak of three straight victories come to an end on Friday, as it fell to fourth-ranked Oklahoma State, 12-7. The Wildcats had previously been undefeated at home this season, with wins over Baylor and South Carolina, both of which were ranked in the Top-10 nationally. The loss drops the Cats to 4-3 on the season, while the Cowgirls improve to 3-2. Oklahoma State defeated K-State by a total score total of 1443-1357, with an overall point score of 12-7. In English, K-State fell to OSU by an overall point score of 6-3 and a total score total of 728-713. In Equitation on the Flat, sophomore Larissa Laffey continued to impress, as she picked up her second MVP award in as many weeks by defeating Oklahoma State's Ali Rose, 76-73. Overall in the discipline, OSU defeated K-State, 3-1(330-319). In Equitation Over Fences, the Cowgirls slipped past the Wildcats by a total score of 398-394 (3-2). Kansas State was led by freshmen Catherine Avolese and Shana Barnett. Avolese rode past OSU's Jordan White, 81.5-70, while Barnett defeated Alice White of Oklahoma State, 84-77. In Hunter Seat exhibition action, Kansas State's Kali Yates defeated OSU rider Haydan Vosuburgh, 69-52. K-State's Kristen Rheinlander also picked up a win by topping Chelsea Zulia of OSU, 81.5-70. On the Western stage, Oklahoma State out-rode K-State by a final point total of 6-4, with an overall score total of 715-644. On the Reining side, Kansas State's Kayla Hatfield tallied her third consecutive win by defeating Cowgirl Jenna Blumer, 72-65. Senior Alecia Zimbelman notched the Cats only other point of the match with a 71.5-69.5 victory over Christy McElreath of Oklahoma State. K-State was defeated by OSU by a point total of 3-2, with an overall score total of 349.5-277.5. In Horsemanship, Kansas State was led by freshman Kelly Bovaird, who picked up her fourth win of the season by riding past Oklahoma State's Courtney Whitacre, 76-74.5. The Tulsa, Okla. native was also awarded the match MVP for her performance over Whitacre. Sophomore Whitney Unkefer also tallied a point in the match as she defeated OSU rider Mamie Tomlin, 74.5-73. Oklahoma State was the overall winner in Horsemanship by a point total of 3-2 but K-State outscored the Cowgirls, 366.5-365.5. In exhibition action on the Western stage, K-State's Allison Freeman and Libby Robinson picked up victories over OSU riders. Freeman out-rode Oklahoma State's Mackenzie Fugitt, 73.5-72, while Robinson topped Oklahoma State rider Taylor New, 66.5-61.5.
