Kansas State English Equestrian Team Qualifies for Zones

The Kansas State English equestrian team won its final show of the regular season Saturday afternoon at Fox Creek Stables. The team finished the season with 206 points including the 36 it earned today. Truman State ended the season in second with 117 points. Iowa State placed second at the show with 25. With the win, K-State automatically qualifies as a team for Zone 9 competition April 12 and 13 at Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. Assistant coach Meghan Cunningham will announce the team prior to compretition.

"The women had another strong showing today," Cunningham said. "I feel that we are prepared for the regional show. We have 10 women qualified ."

Four riders, including three K-State individuals tied for High-Point Rider honors. K-State sophomore Allison Woodworth won the tie-breaker. This marked the third time she has won the award this year. A K-State rider has won the High-Point honor at every show this season.

First-place finishers included Natalie Bennett (intermediate flat), Dehlia Burdan (open flat), Jacquie Griffin (novice fences), Rachel Pierson (advanced walk/trot/canter), Natalie Poholsky (advanced walk/trot/canter), Kelli Wilson (novice fences), Woodworth (open fences), and Sara Zurliene (intermediate fences).

Burdan (open fences), Christy Conforti (advanced walk/trot/canter), Jenae Grossart (novice fences and novice flat), Sarah Pittenger (advanced walk/trot/canter), Woodworth (open flat), Zurliene (intermediate flat) placed second.

Burdan's first-place finish in open flat qualified her for Zone 9 competition. Pierson (advanced walk/trot/canter) and Pittenger (advanced walk/trot/canter) will join Bennett (novice fences and novice flat), Burdan (open fences), Jessica Gittleman (walk/trot), Griffin (novice flat), Julie Hufft (advanced walk/trot/canter), Melissa Thompson (intermediate flat), Sarah Waxman (intermediate flat) and Woodworth (open fences and open flat) in regional competition Sunday.

The regional show begins at 9 a.m. Sunday at Fox Creek Stables. Admission to the show is free. Results will be available after the show at www.k-statesports.com
