Equestrian Team Dominates Second Show of the Weekend
Kansas State Western equestrian riders Amanda Gigot and Erin Peery tied for High-Point Rider honors Sunday afternoon at Fox Creek Stables. Both helped the to their fourth consecutive and sixth team victory this season. This is the second time this season each has earned the honor of High-Point Rider. Wildcat riders have earned the High-Point honors in six of nine shows.
"Our women really came on strong this weekend," head coach Lindsay Breidenthal said. "I could not have been more pleased with our performances."
The team leading the regional standings after the regular season will automatically qualify the entire team for Region 2 competition. This year's Western regionals will be hosted by Black Hawk Community College on Mar. 9 in Moline, Ill. K-State (172) extended its lead over Black Hawk (146) to 26 points with one show remaining in the regular season.
"We were really able to put some cushion between us and Black Hawk," Breidenthal said. "We were able to put up eight points on Saturday and another 10 points today. Now our main focus is going to be on preparing for regionals."
Peery, Brandi Vogel, Darcy Ferguson and Jill Sump took the one through four slots in the first section of open horsemanship. The second section of open horsemanship was no different, as fellow Wildcats, Gigot, Caitlin Morrison, Jessie Baldwin, Lacey Glover and Amanda Olbricht went one through five.
Additional first-place finishers for Kansas State included Gigot (reining), Megan Hemberger (advanced I), Lindsey Hicks (advanced II), Beth Jones (advanced I), Peery (reining, open horsemanship), Beverly Wilson (advanced I) and Haley Wilson (intermediate).
Third-place ribbon winners for the `Cats included Ruth Bradley (intermediate II), Krystal Briggs (advanced I), Mary Dill (beginner), Lindsey George (advanced II), Darcy Ferguson (open horsemanship) and Andrea Wosel (intermediate II).
Weekend qualifiers for postseason competition included Krystal Briggs (intermediate), Cobb (intermediate), George (advanced), Sarah Grotheer (advanced), Hicks (advanced) and Vogel (reining). The `Cats have qualified a total of 21 Western riders for post season competition.
The Western team's next show will be at Black Hawk Community College on Mar. 8 for its final event before the Region 2 Competition the next morning. Results will be available after the show at www.k-statesports.com
