IRVING, Texas – Kansas State women’s basketball placed four student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 team in an announcement by the Big 12 Conference on Tuesday. Three of K-State’s honorees received a first team citation, while one was chosen for the second team.
Since the beginning of the Big 12 in 1996-97, K-State has earned a league-best 94 Academic All-Big 12 honors including 77 first team citations which also paces the Big 12.
Wildcats to earn the Academic All-Big 12 first team honor were: seniors JuliAnne Chisholm (life sciences/pre-med) and Emma Ostermann (kinesiology) and junior Brittany Chambers (life sciences/pre-med). Chisholm tallied her fourth career academic honor from the Big 12 and her second in women’s basketball, as she was a two-time recipient in volleyball. Chambers received her second career first team honor, while Ostermann earned her first career citation.
Earning second team honors for the first time in her career were senior Jalana Childs (hotel and restaurant management). Childs was a first team Academic All-Big 12 recipient in 2009-10.
Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the women’s basketball academic all-league team consisted of 27 first team members combined with 13 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Wildcats return home on Saturday to face Texas at 6 p.m., in Bramlage Coliseum. Saturday’s game will mark K-State’s participation in the national “Play 4Kay” initiative. The first 4,000 fans will receive a free pink t-shirt and Air Elite Dunkers will perform at halftime.
