Kansas State Coach and Player Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening Statement…
“I thought we had moments in this basketball game that showed the kind of basketball team that we could be but those moments were brief in relation to the full 40 minutes. We have got to keep building on those positive and good moments and eliminate those mistake-filled and soft moments, particular on the defensive end. Tonight was more of just not getting the job done on the boards and defensively and that is rare for us. We have also been able to rely on playing really reliable, aggressive defense and tonight we had no sense of that and to me, that was the biggest difference maker in this game. Just our lack of energy, commitment to fight on the defensive end was, to me, the biggest frustration tonight. I was really proud of the floor game that Ashia Woods and Leti Romero brought to the floor. They just battled every second, and it was not just about their points, it was about their presents defensively – their hands, their deflections – and just the battle mentality by those two. I hope it catches on because they are showing the kind of great Big 12 competitors that they are.”

On being fatigued at the end…
“I think what failed us was our defense and that is disappointing to me. You think that you are working to make progress offensively and we think we have and we are, and they we abandon it defensively. Odyssey (Sims) is a great player but I think we are capable of being, overall, significantly better defensively than we were tonight.”

On the play of Ashia Woods and Leti Romero…
“They have been doing it consistently. Ashia has not been posting these types of scoring numbers but she has run the offense, screening, wanted to catch it, made the next pass and executed. If the play breaks down, she figures out how to fix it. She has been bringing that and tonight we saw continued improvement. We talk all the time about stepping in the gym and getting better. Today we got tougher and I think we are seeing that from these two. We played a good team tonight, obviously a top 10 team in the country. If you look at the numbers these two posted and you are Baylor defensively, you are saying that these are the two kids that we need to guard because no one else is hurting you, but they still answer the call.”

On K-State going forward…
“I think we had a lot of opportunities tonight, but we just played soft. You have to be very, very fierce with your disposition as an open shooter. You need to have toughness on the catch and shoot. We sometimes tend to be very soft on the perimeter with those catches. There is not that same level of competitive toughness and we have to develop that. Again, I really believe tonight was about energy, effort, and accountability on the defensive end of the floor. I thought that was the biggest different tonight was the toughness and commitment to pride to play defense in this league. Baylor is a great basketball team but I believe that we are a significantly better team than we showed tonight.”

Junior forward Ashia Woods
On her performance…
“I was hoping to be more effective offensively and scoring wise. I do try to do the little things like screening and finding the open man off of the cut. It is just something that I have been trying to build off of and to become a more effective scoring threat.”

On her assertiveness…
“I am probably playing with the most confidence that I have been just because of practice. Rehab is also where I got a lot of confidence from. So much of it is repetition where I just know what I am doing, and I am just playing with confidence.”

On K-State’s team goals moving forward…
“We need to get tougher because it is not going to get much easier. We just have to understand that we have to be tough and find every single night.”

Freshman guard Leticia Romero
On the importance of the win…
“Obviously the Big 12 is hard and we need to get ready for that. I think being a young team is no excuse, but we are doing a good job in practice. We just need to do a better job in games..”

Baylor Coach and Player Quotes

Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On Ashia Woods’ performance…
“What is she averaging, nine points a game? And she has only made, like one three-pointer all year, and she made four tonight. If she does that every night, they are going to win a lot of ball games. Either our defense is bad or she played really well. We will go back and watch the film. All the players that we had guard her, we will try to ask if she made a great shot or if it was our defense. She did have a breakout night because she does not do that every night. She does that every night and they are going to have a great year.”

On the Bears’ post play…
“I thought Sune [Agbuke] was outstanding. She, for two years, has had to battle every day in practice against Brittney Griner and that senior group of post players that we lost, and now it is her time to shine. She played the most minutes tonight that she has ever played, and I thought she was just solid. She made shots, she finished, she made all of her free throws, and she had a double-double. You need to have a post presence in this league, and we know what we get with Odyssey Sims every night, but she cannot do it by herself. I challenged the post players to have somebody step up. I just thought Sune was outstanding.”

On Odyssey Sims’ play…
“There is no question you want the ball in her hands. When people make a run, you make sure the right people on your team are shooting the ball and that is what we did. I thought we took good shots. If you look at our field goal percentage, it is pretty good on the road. We did not miss a lot of shots and the ones we did miss were good shots. I just thought we played solid from start to finish. It was not anything spectacular, but there was a lot of good things. I thought we eliminated second and third shots from them and gave them one shot every time. I thought we took care of the basketball – 13 turnovers is pretty good on the road. When you can do those things on the road in this league, you have a chance to win a lot of games.”

Senior guard Odyssey Sims
On her offensive production…
“I just kept attacking in my mind, coming off of screens whether it was a hedge or a double. The ball is going to be in my hands almost every time and I just cannot stop being aggressive no matter what.”

On Sune Agbuke’s performance…
“Like coach said, she stepped up and played big for us tonight. She challenged our post players to score the ball and rebound and she stepped up and did it. If she can do that for us every night, we will be pretty good.”
