Men's Golf Inks Four For 2006-07 Season

MANHATTAN, Kan. Head men’s golf coach Tim Norris announced the signing of four high school golfers for the 2006-07 season. Joe Ida, Ross Geubelle (pronounced GOO-bell), Brian Larson and Jason Schulte (SHUL-tee) all have signed national letters of intent (NLI) to join the Wildcat golf program.

“These guys are a great fit for our program,” Norris said. “They came in and were really impressed with the facilities and the opportunity to further their game. All of them have their best golf in front of them. They have a strong work ethic and basic fundamentals of the game, and we will try to supply the rest.”

Ida, currently a senior at Fort Scott (Kan.) High School will be coming in next year with many accomplishments under his belt. He recorded four wins as a junior with a 73.3 stroke average. He was named to the all-conference team his first three years, including a trip to the state championship as a sophomore.

“Joe is a solid player,” Norris said. “He has good fundamentals and definitely has his best golf in front of him. He is very consistent and has a great attitude for the game.”

Geubelle, another Kansas native, currently attends Lakin High School. He won the 2005 3A State Championship at Smoky Hills CC in Hays, Kan., carding a 71. He was named all-league, all-region, all-area, and all-state his freshman through junior years.

“I watched Ross win the high school championship last season. He started to struggle, but he really collected himself halfway through as he went on to win the tournament,” said Norris.

Larson is one of two out-of-state players to join the recruiting class. Larson, a senior at Lourdes High School in Rochester, Minn., carries an impressive resume coming into K-State next fall. He was part of two Minnesota State Champion teams, as Lourdes won the tournament in 2003 and 2005. Both years he earned all-state honors.

“Brian really understands the team concept of golf being on two state champion teams. He is really looking forward to a longer season coming from Minnesota,” Norris said.

Schulte rounds out this year’s recruiting class. As a stand-out golfer at Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Mo., he helped lead the Hawklets to a state championship in 2004. He also registered three top-10 finishes on the AJGA circuit, as well as winning the 2003 Kansas Junior Amateur.

“Jason is a hard worker who has had great accomplishments to this point,” said Norris. “We both feel like he can improve his game by coming to K-State. He has the kind of commitment to play golf at a high level, and I believe he can really flourish in our program.”

All four players will end their high school careers this coming spring before heading to K-State in the fall of 2006 as true freshmen.
