Nov. 14, 2010
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State men’s golf coach Tim Norris announced the signing of Kyle Weldon to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) for the 2011-12 season.
Weldon, a native of Des Peres, Mo., is a four year letterwinner from Parkway South High School in Manchester, Mo. He has been named to the Suburban West All-Conference team the last three years, while also earning all-metro and all-state honors as a sophomore and junior.
“Kyle has a passion for the game and a commitment to academics, so I know this is going to be a great place for him to further his game and get a world-class education,” said Norris. “He has a solid all-around game and has played all over the country. I know he is going to fit in well with the core players we have here on the team already. I think he will do a fantastic job for us and represent K-State in great fashion.”
Weldon caught the eye of coaches last summer when he took first place at the PGA Junior series at Fox Run Golf Club in Eureka, Mo.
“There is always a tournament on the schedule where you know if a player can win on this golf course, they can play anywhere in the country and this tournament was definitely one of those cases,” continued Norris. “The golf course was very demanding; it had high rough, and the speed and firmness of the greens was very difficult. The tournament had everything you are looking for in an examination of a player, and Kyle was able to win it in a playoff.”
Other career highlights for Weldon include a tie for second in the 2010 US Junior Amateur qualifier, earning him the distinction of first alternate. He placed second at last summer’s Missouri Junior Amateur as well as the MSHSAA Class 4 State Championship. Weldon took fifth at the AJGA Midwest Players Championship in Chicago, Ill., and also competed in the Callaway Junior World and the PGA Junior Championship.
In addition to Weldon, Daniel Wood who has been on a church mission in the Dominican Republic, will rejoin the team as a part of the 2011-12 squad.
