Wildcats Trying to Survive Elements After Opening Round

GO WILDCATS

SOMIS, Calif. Battling the same strong, dry winds that continued to fuel fires some 45 miles from the golf course, the Kansas State Wildcats and the entire field at the Club Glove Intercollegiate struggled to keep the number of strokes down during the first round of play on Monday. Kansas State was in eighth place after the first round scores were turned in late in the afternoon at Saticoy Country Club.

Tournament-host Pepperdine turned in the lowest mark in the first round, but their 12-over 300 indicated just how rough the conditions were. As the final scores from the first 18 holes were being turned nearly eight hours after the first round began winds were expected to diminish slightly, but not enough for the National Weather Service to suspend a High Wind Warning.

All 12 teams in the tournament shot over 300 in the opening round and the Wildcats found themselves near the middle of the pack with a 320 (+32).

Joe Ida and Mitchell Gregson led the way for Kansas State through round one and were tied for 23rd after each fired a 7-over 79. Brian Larson, who made his first appearance in the K-State lineup, carded a 9-over 81 along with Robert Streb and was tied for 34th.

Despite the conditions, Kyle Smell made the par-3s look easy in the first round. Smell was 1-under after sinking a birdie on the 190-yard hole 13 and made par on the three other par-3s. Smell’s 2.75 par-3 scoring average was tied for second in the round.

Play continued into the evening on Monday but tournament officials believed the second round wouldn’t be completed before darkness forced teams off the lawn.

Tuesday’s forecast isn’t any friendlier but the competition will resume with the completion of the second round and beginning of the third and final round. Classes were cancelled Monday at Pepperdine’s nearby Malibu campus and were in doubt for Tuesday as the Santa Ana winds continued to wreak havoc and stoke a wild fire in Malibu Canyon.
