Wildcats Tied for 12th at Nelson Invitational
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Kansas State got off to a slow start to open its final tournament of the fall season at 16-team Nelson Invitational played at Stanford University. For the second tournament in a row, the Wildcats carded a first-round score of 292 (+16) and are tied for 12th place through 18 holes of the 54-hole event. The tournament is being held at the par-69, 6,444-yard Stanford Golf Club. The Stanford Golf Club usually plays at par-71, but is currently being redesigned.
“Just like all fall, we’ve kind of dug ourselves a hole,” head coach Tim Norris said. “These guys are good enough players to get out and we’ve got two more rounds to see what we can do.”
Senior Matt Van Cleave led the Wildcats with a 1-under 68 and is tied with six others for fourth place. Van Cleave is making his 23rd straight start for the Wildcats and is only three strokes behind tournament-leader Spencer Levin of New Mexico (65).
Senior Nick Schumacher, fired an opening round of of 74 and is tied for 51st. To round out the lineup, juniors Tyler Cummins, Jonathan James and Ben Kern all carded 75s and are tied for 61st.
Georgia State is leading the field at 275 (-1), while New Mexico is two shots back at 277 (+1).
