Wildcats Fight Low Scores at Alister MacKenzie
FAIRFAX, Calif. - The Kansas State men's golf team fired two of its lower rounds of the season Monday, but low scores littered the scoreboard during day one of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. The Wildcats, playing on the short par 71, 6,606-yard Meadow Club, were tied for fourth after round one at 2-under par 282, but slightly fell after a 3-over par 287 performance in the afternoon. The Cats are tied for 10th heading into Tuesday's final round.
"It was nice to see consistent play from every player today," head coach Tim Norris said. "The course if very defenseless against low scores, so the opportunity is out there if you make putts. The talent and shots are there for us, but it's just a matter of putting it together for a whole round."
Host school California leads the tournament following an amazing 25-under par 543 day-one performance. The Bears are ten strokes ahead of San Jose State, who stands second at 15-over par 553. Cal's Michael Wilson is the individual leader through 36 holes at 10-under par 132.
Kyle Yonke, who carded a career-best 3-over par 216 at last year's Alister MacKenzie Invitational, leads the Wildcats at 1-under par 141. He is on pace to break that career-best score as his 36-hole score of 141 is a career-low for two rounds. The Lubbock, Texas, native, will begin the third round tied for 21st.
Two shots behind Yonke is freshman Jason Schulte at even-par 143, thanks in part to a career-low round of 2-under par 69. He is tied for 33rd heading into Tuesday.
A pack of three Wildcats, Robert Streb, Mitchell Gregson and Joe Ida, are all tied for 39th at 2-over par 144.
The final round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational begins Tuesday, with tee times beginning at 8:00 a.m. (PT). Results will be posted on www.k-statesports.com as soon as they become available.
