MANHATTAN, Kan. - Due to thunderstorms in the Manhattan area the final round of the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate was not completed. After battling rain most of the day, play was called a little over midway through the third round as thunder rolled into the region. The results through the 36 holes completed yesterday will be final, shortening the tournament length from its originally scheduled 54 holes. This was the first time that the Colbert Intercollegiate, held at the par-72, 7,147-yard Colbert Hills Golf Course, has been cut in the tournament's four year history.
The Kansas State men's golf team finished the abbreviated Jim Colbert Intercollegiate in third-place for the second consecutive year. The Wildcats shot a 36-hole total of 586 and finished 10 strokes off the pace set by Missouri. The Tigers took home the team title by shooting an impressive 290-286576 to finish at even par. Drake finished in second place by firing a 293-291584, good for an eight-over par and two stroke advantage over third-place K-State.
Southwest Missouri State's Austin Hackett took medalist honors after carding a four-under par 71-69140. Coming in second-place was Missouri's David Jenkins. The Tiger shot a 70-71141 to finish at three-under par and one-stroke back of medalist Austin Hackett. The only other golfers that finished under par were K-State's senior co-captain Aaron Watkins, who carded a 70-73143, putting him in a tie for third-place with Missouri's Chris Mabry, who shot a 72-71143.
Pacing the rest of the Wildcats were junior Matt Van Cleave, who posted the most impressive round of Monday by a Wildcat, shooting a 3-under par 69 in what turned out to be the final round, placing him in a tie for ninth-place at 77-69146. Senior co-captain A.J. Elgert tied with Van Cleave for ninth place after shooting a 76-70146. Rounding out the Wildcats' lineup were sophomore Josh Persons and senior Greg Douglas. Persons fired a 77-74151, placing him into a tie for 22nd, while Douglas carded a 77-75152, to finish in a tie for 27th-place.
K-State also had four members of it team competing as individuals, senior co-captain Tim Moody, sophomore Ben Kern, sophomore Jimmy Dietz and senior Bryan Schweizer. Kern had the most impressive finish as he fired a two-over par 73-73146 to finish in a tie for ninth-place with Van Cleave and Elgert. Schweizer and Dietz each finished in a tie for 31st, after firing rounds of 79-75154 and 78-76154 respectively. Moody rounded out the Wildcat individuals, as he fired an 81-80161, good for 43rd overall.
