NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
The Kansas State men’s golf team carded twin rounds of 288 and sits in 11th place with a 576 at the 54-hole Mason Rudolph Championship. Making the schools first appearance in the state of Tennessee since 1991, the Wildcats are battling a strong field at the par-71, 6,990-yard Roper’s Knob Course at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. Eight of the 15 teams are ranked in the top 50 of the Golfweek/Sagarin poll.
“The scores were low today,” head coach Tim Norris said. “We were just a couple of holes away from capitalizing on a couple of opportunities and having a lower score. I wasn’t unhappy at all with our score for the first time being here. The competition is good here and it is one of the tougher fields we’ll face for the year.”
Coming off a seventh-place finish at the KU Invitational, junior Tyler Cummins continued his strong play with a 66-72138 (-4) and is tied for second with Andreas Hoegberg of Central Florida and Josh Nelms of Middle Tennessee State. Cummins’ first-round score of 66 is tied the fourth-lowest score in K-State history.
Cummins is one-stroke back of second place, but seven strokes off the pace set by Ty Harris of Georgia State, who carded a blistering 63-68131 (-11).
The second-lowest Wildcat is junior Ben Kern, who is tied for 24th after firing rounds of 72-70 (E). Coming off two straight top 10s, senior Matt Van Cleave fired rounds 74-73147 (+5) and is tied for 52nd. Freshman Clay Hodge carded a 150 and is tied for 62nd, while freshman Kyle Yonke sits in 68th at 153.
Georgia State is dominating the competition at 20-under par, 12 strokes clear of Mississippi. Georgia State fired rounds of 269 and 279 to finish at 548.
