K-State Places Second in Colbert Intercollegiate
MANHATTAN, Kan. For the second consecutive day, Mitch Gregson and Robert Streb shot the same low score for the Wildcats and led Kansas State to a second place finish at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate. Gregson and Streb finished with an even-72 on Tuesday at Colbert Hills Golf Course where the Wildcats finished behind Miami (Ohio).
The K-State pair matched rounds the entire tournament, recording a 75-71-72218 (+2), and finished tied for fourth overall. As a team, the Wildcats shot 299-292-296887 (+11) and finished 12 strokes behind the Redhawks and 11 strokes ahead of Marquette.
Gregson and Streb were paired with the Redhawks’ Michael Drobnick and Ben Wood for the final round on Tuesday and pushed the duo before settling in at fourth at the end of the day.
Gregson opened play with a strong front nine that included a birdie on the par-4 third hole. Hitting from over 150 yards, Gregson’s second shot landed inside five feet of the cup and the sophomore from Waterloo, Ill., knocked it in. Gregson led Wood by one at the turn but two birdies on the back nine were erased by two bogeys including one on the final hole. Wood birdied twice on the back while finishing with a 1-under 71 and a 72-74-71217 (+1) tie for second place.
“(The birdie on three) was a boost to start the round off,” Gregson said. “I bogied the last whole, which stunk but it happens. Out here, par is an excellent score. Nine times out of 10 on this course if you make par, you’re going to move up on the leader board. Today was not one of those nine times. I was happy with even. You can’t really be upset shooting that.”
Streb also jumped off to a fast start in his pairing with Drobnick, recording a birdie on the opening hole while Drobnick needed six strokes on the par-5 first. Drobnick rallied however, shaving strokes on three of the next eight holes and finished par for the back nine and took the tournament title with a 73-73-70216 (E).
The Wildcats recorded their second-lowest round of the tournament and second-lowest round after two tournaments this fall but couldn’t catch Miami (Ohio). Joe Ida scored his third 75 of the tournament en route to shooting a 9-over 225 and a tie for 12th place. Kyle Smell contributed the Wildcats final score of the third round with a 5-over 77. Smell finished the tournament 79-75-77231 (+15) and tied with teammates Kyle Yonke (74-78-79231) and Ross Guebelle (78-76-77231) for 25th.
K-State freshman Daniel Wood shot a 72-74-74220 (+4) in his collegiate debut and finished the event in sixth place. Spencer Alefs (82-83-79244) and Brian Larson (84-80-85249) also competed as individuals.
“There were a lot of bright things and really no bad things to come out of this,” K-State head coach Tim Norris said. “If you get beat, you get a chance to say this is a course I play every day and what holes or what shots didn’t I have when the heat was on.”
The Wildcats will get a week off before taking the first of four trips west this fall. K-State’s next action will be at the Wolfpack Classic on Oct. 8-9 in Reno, Nev.
