K-State Finishes Fourth at Kansas Invitational
The Wildcats, who gained one stroke on the Jayhawks in the third round, fell from second place to fourth behind Houston, Oral Roberts and Kansas, after turning in a team score of 298-297-303898 (+34). The Wildcats finished 10 strokes behind tournament winner Houston.
“It was obviously a positive to be in contention today and have a chance to win,” K-State head coach Tim Norris said. “It’s a little disappointing. We didn’t play to our potential. At this point in the year, after playing all summer, having good practices and qualifying rounds, I was looking for more and I think the guys were as well.”
Kansas State notched the fourth most birdies of any team in the competition with 34 and averaged 4.82 strokes on par-5 holes but shot 43-over par on par 4 holes.
“I didn’t see anything different than any other coach, just a lot of strokes wasted inside 40 or 50 yards,” Norris said. “Those are preventable, you can work on those. Sometimes when you can turn 3 shots into 2, it keeps the round going and can get you lower. That will be the focus, always has been and always will. If you can be sharp in that scoring zone good things will happen to you and your team.”
Kyle Yonke had the best score of the day for the Wildcats and matched his opening round 75 to finish the event with a 75-77-75227 (+11). Spencer Alefs, Joe Ida and Mitchell Gregson all closed play with a 4-over par 76, and Robert Streb turned in a 75-74-78227 (+11). Gregson’s 16th-place finish was the highest for Wildcats contributing to the team score.
K-State freshman Kyle Smell, who competed as an individual, concluded his impressive collegiate debut tied for eighth place with a 5-over 221.
“I was obviously happy with what Kyle smell did, but it’s no surprise,” Norris said. “He’s a player that has a bright bright future not only at Kansas State but also has a desire to play professionally after college. He has the talent, tools and dedication.”
Kansas State will host 10 schools in the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 24-25, in Manhattan, Kan.
