K-State Places Ninth at Wolverine Intercollegiate
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Following a final-round score of 12-over par 296, the Kansas State men's golf team dropped two spots to finish ninth at the Wolverine Intercollegiate Sunday. K-State carded a 287-288-296-871 (+19)and finished just nine strokes out of second place. Wisconsin, who held only a four-stroke lead over Michigan heading into the final round, ran away with the team title, carding the lowest final-round score, a 3-over par 287, to win by 11 strokes. The Badgers finished the tournament at 1-under par 851. "We just couldn't quite get over the hump this weekend," head coach Tim Norris said. "I think that if we put together a nice round today, we could have been in the top three or four, but we just had too many bogeys that shouldn't have been bogeys." Oregon State's Mitch Gillis, who led the field heading into the final 18 holes, held on to take home individual honors, firing a 54-hole score of 6-under par 207 (65-70-72). Junior Kyle Yonke finished tied for 17th at 3-under par 216. His 17th-place finish equals the best placing of his career. As a freshman, Yonke tied for 17th at his first tournament, the Kansas Invitational. The Lubbock, Texas, native, also tied his lowest career 54-hole score of 216, the same score he recorded at last year's Alister MacKenzie Invitational. It was his best score vs. par since firing a 1-over par 217 at the Barona Collegiate Cup last fall. "Kyle is playing really well to start off the fall, along with Joe (Ida) and Mitchell (Gregson)," said Norris. Gregson moved up eight spots to tie for 41st at 8-over par 221. Two strokes behind him was Streb, who shot a 3-over par 74 during the final frame to finish in 52nd at 10-over par 223. Joe Kinney and Jason Schulte rounded out the Wildcat competitors. Kinney finished at 16-over par 229. Schulte, who competed as an individual, finished tied for 54th at 12-over par 225.
