VERONA, Wis.- For the second consecutive day, the Badger Invitational was cut short because of rain and will be shortened to 36 holes after originally being scheduled as a 54-hole event.

After completing the final six holes of the first round Saturday morning, second round play was once again halted at 1:20 p.m. due to stormy conditions.

Despite the bog-like conditions, the Kansas State men's golf team managed to finish the first round in second place after firing an opening round 294 at the par-72, 6,888-yard Olympic Ridge Golf Course. The Wildcats' opening round was topped only by Purdue which shot a stellar 290.

Senior co-captain Aaron Watkins posted a 2-under-par 70 in his opening round, tying him for second with two others, and one stroke back of Purdue's Shiv Kapur for the lead.

Sophomore Josh Persons placed himself into contention after carding an opening even-par 72 and finishing tied for fifth. Furthermore, senior Matt Van Cleave finished the first round with a 3-over-par 75 planting himself into a tie for 14th place.

Midway through the second round, K-State finds itself one stroke back of first-place Purdue and one stroke ahead of third-place UNC-Wilmington. With 10 holes remaining, Watkins is currently in first place at four-under-par, one stroke up on Michigan State's Craig Revell. Persons is currently tied for fourth and is even-par for the tournament, while Van Cleave is among the Top-15 golfers.
