MANHATTAN, Kan. – After a solid performance in the opening two rounds of the 2012 Waterloo Open, Kansas State senior golfer Ben Juffer caught fire on the final day, carding six birdies in the final nine holes, to win the Amateur Division of the event.

Juffer notched a tournament-low final round score of 65 to move from 13th place to atop the leaderboard with fellow amateur Brian Verduyn, who came into Sunday in a three-way tie for second. Verduyn missed a birdie putt on the last hole of regulation to force a playoff. Juffer went on to record an eagle on the par-5 playoff hole and seal the victory for the West Des Moines, Iowa, native.

A team captain for the Wildcats, Juffer is no stranger to success in the amateur ranks, especially in his home state, having been named the 2007 Iowa PGA Junior Tour Player of the Year. Juffer also won the Des Moines Junior City tournament in 2007 and recorded a top-10 finish in the Iowa Men's Amateur at Davenport Country Club and a top-20 finish in the Iowa Masters Men's Invitational.

Juffer and the rest of the K-State men’s golf team will kick off the 2012 fall season as they will compete in the Shocker Classic, September 10 and 11, at the Wichita Country Club in Wichita, Kan.
