Wildcats Playing in State Amateurs

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State men’s golf has eight players taking part in state amateur tournaments this week, as seven begin play in the 97^th Kansas Amateur in Topeka and one is bidding for a shot at the Oklahoma Amateur Championship.

Playing at the Topeka Country Club and Shawnee Country Club beginning this morning are current Wildcats: Kyle Yonke, Joe Ida, Spencer Alefs and Jason Schulte. Yonke is the 40^th seed and is taking on the 25^th seed, Derek Dultmeier (8:25 a.m.). Ida comes into the event as the 23^rd seed and is playing the 42^nd seed Zac Burton (11:07 a.m.). Alefs is the 51^st seed in the match play event and he is paired against 14^th-seeded Sam Wempe (11:34 a.m.). Schulte is the 46^th seed and will play the 19^th seed Gary Lucas (11:43 a.m.).

A pair of former Wildcats face off in the first round of match play, as the 24^th seed and 2001 Kansas Amateur champion Matt Williams takes on 41^st seed Jay Kramer at 8:43 a.m.

Incoming freshman Kyle Smell is the highest seeded player representing Kansas State, as he is the 12^th seed taking on the 53^rd seed Drew Lethem (9:46 a.m.).

The 97^th Kansas Amateur begins today and will conclude on July 22 with a 36-hole match play championship.

Robert Streb has advanced to this morning’s semifinal round of the Oklahoma Amateur Championship in Edmond, Okla. The hometown product entered the match-play tournament as the eighth seed. Streb defeated the 48^th seed Walker Henson of Enid, Okla., in the first round 2 up and continued to roll in the round of 16 with a 5 and 4 win over 40^th seed Chad Bryant of Newcastle, Okla.

During Wednesday’s two rounds of action, Streb defeated the 41^st seed Tyler Hunt 2 up in the round of 16 and reached the semifinals with a 1 up win over the 16^th seeded Chris Ward of McKinney, Okla. In today’s semifinal, Streb will face Mark Austin of Norman, Okla., beginning at 8 a.m.
