Four Cats Advance in Amateur Match Play
A field of 133 golfers was trimmed to 64 after rounds of stroke play on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday began the first round of match, which runs through Sunday.
Sophomore-to-be Ross Geubelle posted the second best round on Wednesday earning him the No. 2 seed after a stroke-play score of 2-under 140. Geubelle then moved on to match play and continued his success with a 5 and 3 victory over the No. 63 seed Tyler Henderson.
Junior-to-be Mitchell Gregson was able to earn the No. 3 overall seed in match play by shooting a 1-under 141 in stroke play. In match play, Gregson was able to defeat Zach Pederson, 3 and 1, to move on to Friday’s second round.
Junior-to-be Joe Ida tied for sixth place in stroke play after carding a 2-over 144. On Thursday, Ida defeated No. 58 seed Sam Walenz, 5 and 4, to advance to Friday.
Sophomore-to-be Jason Schulte also carded a top 10 score in stoke play at 3-over 145, placing him in a six-way tie for eighth place. Schulte, the No. 12 seed, went on to match play and defeated No. 53 seed Zac Burton, 1 up, to advance to Friday.
Another sophomore-to-be, Kyle Smell, tied for 16th place with a stroke play score 5-over 147. On Thursday, the 16th-seeded Smell bested the No. 49 seed Chad Judd, 5 and 3, to move on to Friday’s second round.
Sophomore-to-be Joe Kinney tied for 21st place on Wednesday following a 6-over 148, pairing him against the No. 44 seed Andrew Storm. No. 21 seed Kinney was not able to move past Thursday’s match play with a 2 and 1 loss to Storm.
Junior-to-be Spencer Alefs shot a 10-over 152 to move on to match play as the No. 51 seed. However, Alefs was defeated, 7 and 5, by No. 14 seed Charlie Stevens.
Incoming freshman Chase Chamberlin did not make the cut for match play as he carded a 14-over 156, missing the cut by one stroke.
Former Wildcat golfers Kyle Yonke and Tyler Cummins both qualified for match play after scores of 4-over 146 and 8-over 150, respectively. Yonke, the No. 15 seed, bested No. 50 seed Bobby Knowles, 5 and 3, in the first round. The No.39 seed Cummins also won his first round match as he defeated No. 26 seed Riley Piles, 7 and 5. |
