PEORIA, Ariz. - Former Wildcat golfer and two-year veteran on the Gateway Tour, Aaron Watkins, recently recorded his first victory on the tour at Tournament 5 of the Desert Summer Circuit, June 4-7.

The Mesa, Ariz., native, broke away from the pack during round two by carding a six under par 66 at the Trilogy Golf Course in Peoria, Ariz. He shot even-par 72 during the final round, but with the windy conditions, it was good enough to hold on for the victory. Watkins finished the tournament with a four-round score of 13-under par 274 to take home $20,356 of first-place prize money.

"I've been playing good the last few weeks," Watkins said. "I've had some high finishes and I'm pretty confident about my game. In the few tournaments prior, I was in the top group for the final round, but wasn't able to take home the win. With the high winds during the final round of this last tournament, I tried to keep the ball lower like Coach (Tim) Norris taught me to, and it worked out in my favor."

Watkins, the leading money winner on the tour at $37,134.18, has placed in the top-10 in all five tournaments, including four top-five finishes. Through five tournaments this year, he has a 68.41 stroke average.

Watkins accredits his success on the tour from his collegiate experience at Kansas State and playing Colbert Hills during his tenure in Manhattan.

"Playing at Colbert was a big help to my game. It is a demanding golf course with or without wind. The course also taught me how to stay patient. On that course, par is your friend. Out here, we strive for more birdies, but on Friday it was a good score."

Other former Wildcats playing on the Desert Summer Circuit of the Gateway Tour are Matt Van Cleave and Tim Moody. Van Cleave ranks 20th on the money list at $9,595.17 while Moody ranks 22nd at $8,791.50.
