Wildcat golfers continue to roll in summer events

MANHATTAN, Kan. Members of the Kansas State men’s golf program continue to enjoy success on the links this summer with a pair of Wildcats claiming medalist honors Thursday.

Incoming freshman Joe Kinney of Lake Villa, Ill., who placed second at the Midwest Junior Players Championship at the Whisper Creek Golf Club in Huntley, Ill., in mid June, closed out the month by surviving a five-hole playoff in the final round to win the Future Legends 54-hole stroke play tournament held at The Legend at Brandybrook in Wales, Wis., Thursday.

In the final round, Kinney shot a 3-over-par 74 to finish tied atop the leaderboard at 218 with Jordan Elsen of Kenosha, Wis.

The pair battled for four playoff holes before Kinney final broke through in the fifth extra frame, sticking his third shot to within five feet of the hole and tapping in for par and the win.

Kinney opened the day four shots off the pace but was able to play consistently in the stronger winds. His 74 included a 37 on the front nine and a 37 on the back side. On the par-5 15th hole, he reached the green in two to make birdie and boost his momentum heading to the final holes.

“When the wind gets up, scores aren't too low,” he said. “On days like this, I try to make as many pars as I can. I kept the ball in play and didn't get in trouble.”

Also claiming medalist honors on Thursday was junior-college transfer Jay Kramer of Lenexa, Kan. Kramer, who attended Johnson County Community College, captured the sixth stop on the 2005 College Players Tour held at the A. L. Gustin Golf Club in Columbia, Mo.

Kramer fired rounds of 67-69-73209 for a 3-stroke victory over Drew Lethem of Overland Park, Kan.
