Streb Heads to NCAA Championship
MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State freshman Robert Streb (Edmond, Okla./North HS) will head to Sunriver, Ore., to participate in the 2006 NCAA Championship, May 31-June 3. Streb, along with Texas' Randy Lowry, were the two individual qualifiers during last week's NCAA Central Regional in Chardon, Ohio. Streb has been one of K-State's most consistent golfers this year. He is one of only two Wildcats to compete in all 13 events, pacing the Wildcats in two tournaments and placing as the second Wildcat in four others. He has also recorded one top-five finish (T2nd at Matlock Collegiate) and two top-10 finishes (Matlock Collegiate and T6th at ASU Thunderbird Invitational) on the season. A four stroke per day improvement at the regional propelled Streb to the top qualifying spot as he carded a 76-72-68-216 (+3) to tie for 12th. The Edmond, Okla., native, becomes only the fourth Wildcat to qualify for the NCAA Championship, but the second in the last three years. He follows in the footsteps of 1964 NCAA runner-up Jim Colbert, 1992 participant Richard Laing and 2004 participant A.J. Elgert. However, Streb is the first freshman in school history to compete in the championship. Streb will depart for the championship on Saturday and will play practice rounds on Monday, beginning at 9:10 a.m. (PDT), and Tuesday starting at 1:00 p.m. (PDT). Tee times for the opening round of the championship will start at 7:30 a.m. (PDT) on Wednesday. Streb will be paired with Dustin Pimm of Utah and Taylor Wood of Southern California, the top individual qualifiers from the west and east regionals. The four-day, 72-hole championship will be held at the Crosswater Club. The par 72, 7,630-yard course has played host to many collegiate tournaments, including the 2000 NCAA Division I Women's National Championship, the 2003 NCAA Division II Men's National Championship and the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Western Regional Championship. After 54-holes of play, the field will be cut down to the low 15 teams and six individuals not on advancing teams. Live stats will be available throughout the tournament on www.golfstat.com Results will be posted each day on www.k-statesports.com. |
