MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State’s Matt Van Cleave has been selected to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America University Division Men’s At-Large All-District VII Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday.
Van Cleave was among 10 student-athletes selected to the district’s first team and will advance to the national Academic All-America ballot. The combined grade-point average of this year’s team was a 3.76 and included five seniors and five juniors.
A senior from Maryville, Mo., Van Cleave concluded his K-State career tied for 17th at the NCAA Central Regional on May 21. He claimed his second career victory at the 2005 Matlock Invitational on Feb. 15, having won his first individual title at the Purina Classic in 2003. Van Cleave played in all 13 tournaments with a school-record 72.33 stroke average. He is also the school’s all-time career leader in stroke average (73.96).
For the season, Van Cleave made three-straight top five finishes, placing in the top five in five of seven spring tournaments. He was named the Big 12 Conference’s February Golfer of the Month and placed fourth at the Big 12 Championships, earning him his second consecutive all-tournament team finish.
The social science major compiled a 3.763 cumulative GPA and is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 first team selection. In 2004, he was selected as the GCAA Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar recipient.
