Ida, Van Cleave Advance to US Open Sectionals
MANHATTAN, Kan. - Current Kansas State golfer Joe Ida and former Wildcat Matt Van Cleave each advanced to US Open sectional qualifying with their play on May 16 and May 21.
Ida, who played in every event as a freshman this past season, advanced from the Wichita local qualifier on May 16 by tying for first at 2-under par 69. The qualifying was held at Wichita Country Club, the same course Ida and the Wildcats played in the Shocker Classic, April 2-3. During the Shocker Classic, Ida only could only manage two rounds of 5-over par 76 and a round of 4-over 75. The Fort Scott, Kan., native will take part in the US Open sectional qualifying June 4 at Indian Hills Country Club in Kansas City.
Van Cleave, a K-State letterwinner from 2003-05, tied for second at the Kansas City local qualifier on May 21 at Kansas City Country Club. The Maryville, Mo., product fired a 3-under par 67 and was one of seven players to advance to sectional qualifying. Due to his schedule on the Gateway Tour, Van Cleave will compete in the southern California sectional qualifier next month.
